Virden Grove is one of several churches in this community that were active in the Jackson civil rights movement and took part in various civil rights planning meetings. Many of the activities at these churches were held in secret; no announcements were printed and no records kept. The North Jackson Youth Council met in the attic of the church in the early 1960s. The North Jackson Youth Council, formed in 1962 by the NAACP, was composed of local high school and college students and spearheaded what became known as the Jackson Movement.
