Kirkland, Earnest

Earnest Kirkland was born May 10, 1934. Mr. Kirkland was one of the last people to see the three civil rights workers alive. After their deaths, he continued participating in the civil rights movement. He, along with Fred Black, Burline Kirkland Riley, and Lillie Jones, attended “the Poor People’s Campaign in Washington.”They were among the few people from Philadelphia/Neshoba County who also marched with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. when he visited here in 1966. Mr. Kirkland died October 21, 2001 and is buried in Mt. Zion Cemetery.
