Magee, Ruby

Ruby Magee, born in Tylertown, Mississippi, became active in the civil rights movement during the early sixties while she was a student and Jackson State College. Working along side other activists, such as James Meredith, Ruby was involved in many demonstrations and became acquainted with the freedom riders. At the age of twenty-one, Ruby decided to try and register to vote in Walthall County despite the obvious dangers that could result. After taking the literacy test required for registration, she was denied. She filed a complaint against the United States Department of Justice which resulted in a court case in which the judge gave orders for Ruby to be allowed to register.
