Anne Moody, author of A Coming of Age in Mississippi, was born in Wilkinson County in 1940. Her book is an autobiographical account of her experience growing up in South Mississippi. Published in 1969, Moody’s novel tells the story of Moody’s life from age four to twenty-four and addresses the issues faced by young African-Americans in the South through the eyes of a child. Her writing captured the attention of people across the nation and further brought attention to the civil rights movement.
Moody volunteered with the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) and later participated in the Woolworth sit-in in Jackson, The March on Washington D.C., and the Mississippi Freedom Summer.
